The History of the WA Italian Club Perth
The WA Italian Club is one of Perth's most respected function venues, continuing to provide outstanding service and superb club activities for all the Italian community residing in Perth.
The decadent atmosphere has encapsulated the essence of the Italian culture and continues to welcome all Australians through it's doors. The Grande Ballrooms provide a sophisticated and classy ambiance for all to enjoy whilst you celebrate your special occasion.
It all began in 1934 when a group of Italian migrants established the “Casa d'Italia” to meet the social needs of the existing community. Opening in as the first Italian cultural community membership is just like any other community club in that its members play billiards, cards, darts, bridge, bingo and drink Australian beer.
It's history is a long and proud one, which is reflected by it's successful history as an Italian icon in this states history. On 28th of October, 1937 the official building of the Casa d'Italia was opened on Fitzgerald Street in Perth and remains the home of the club today. Thwarted through time with adversities such as the outbreak of the Second World War, the Casa d'Italia remained closed and its future remained uncertain. With the cessation of international hostilities the Casa d'Italia promptly resumed its activities in 1946 and in 1947 its registered name was altered as “WA Italian Club Incorporated”.
Under great leadership the Club was soon registered as licensed premises in 1950 and the Club expanded in leaps and bounds. It was these visionaries that embarked on extensions and allowed the club to cater for all of the membership and the function requirements of the future. Gaining around seven thousand members in 1969 the Club soon became an important icon not only for supporting migration policy and migrant legislation but the government of the day could use the influence as a buffer against political disharmony in the migrant community. Further to this, by opening its doors all Australians the Club fostered the foundations of mutual respect, friendship and cooperation and was an integral part of the move to multiculturalism in this state by working hard to foster relationships between all communities.
The Club has always been the instrument through which the Italian community has expressed its solidarity with the host community and opened its heart by fundraising for the victims of national disasters from the Queensland floods to victims of cyclones and even annual support of Telethon and Appealathon Hospital fundraising initiatives in Perth. Continuing to provide excellence in service to the community as a whole is the vision of the club and it seems that if the past experience is anything to go by it is a task that we are well suited to achieve.
